“French Akaroa”
Sir, —It seems to me that in this troubled and unsettled world we might do something to create a bond between nations by experimenting with a long-term land lease to another Power. Several generations of New Zealanders have cursed the misfortune that Akaroa was not nabbed in time by the French and some are ashamed to this day of the legend that the British resorted to getting the French sailors drunk in Wellington so that they could beat them to it in a slower ship. What about making up for it all in a single glorious gesture? Let us give France a 99-year lease of the township of Akaroa and a few acres besides in the same way that China has given Britain territorial rights to Hong Kong—to mutual advantage.—Yours, etc.,
VIVE LA FRANCE. February 3, 1962.
