Ceremony At Hornby
Five hundred parishioners and visitors attended the opening and blessing of the new convent school, St. Bernadette’s, Hornby, yesterday afternoon by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joycei. The school is in Hei I lei road. The Hornby parish priest (the Rev. E. J. Brosnahan) welcomed the Bishop and thanked all who had assisted in building the school, and Mr M. O'Donoghue, the Roman Catholic inspector of schools, spoke on the place of the school in parish life. The Bishop congratulated Father Brosnahan on his work in the parish since his arrival there three years ago and thanked the Sisters of Mercy for staffing the new school.
At first about 100 primer one to standard two children will attend the school which has four classrooms on four acres of land. Later, the number will increase and the st-hool will be extended over the full range of primary school classes.
Mr E. Haughey welcomed \ sitors and thanked parishioners for help in preparing the grounds and building the school.
