DRIVERLESS TRACTOR

Machine Saved From Fire (NZ. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 17. At the height of a scrub fire at Kaimata, near Inglewood, on Saturday afternoon, a farmer saved his tractor in dramatie fashion. Fanned by a strong wind, the fire was sweeping along a 60-yard front with the tractor right in its path. The flames were licking round the tractor when Mr A J. Sharrock, of Junction road, ran to save it. He put the tractor into reverse gear and switched on the engine. Driveless, the tractor reversed away from the fire. When Mr Sharrock stopped the tractor, only the tyres and the seat had been singed. In the meantime, the Inglewood Volunteer Fire Brigade strove to bring the fire under control. Before it managed to do so, a hayshed containing 14 tons of hay had been destroyed.
