NIGHT SOIL COLLECTION
Survey For Halsweli
A survey will be conducted within the area bounded by the urban fence of the Halswell township to find out if sufficient persons are interested in having a night soil collection.
The Halsweli County Council decided this after a letter from the county health inspector (Mr R. G. Howes' had been read. Mr Howes said that he had received a number of inquiries from persons who had built, or intended building, on sections where permission to install septic tanks had been refused or refusal was likely “In several cases where recent refusal of septic tanks has occurred, the dwellings are completed or almost completed and will be occupied soon. The occupants of those dwellings were, to say the least, most perturbed to learn that there is no collection service available and that they will be faced with the obnoxious task of burial of night soil on their own properties. This practice, when left to Individual occupiers can, in closely populated areas, through lack of proper control, create nuisances and associated health hazards," said Mr Howes.
About 12 persons in the county had to dispose of their own night soil, he said. “As building continues tn poor soakage areas and where individual wells are relied on for domestic supplies of water, further applicants will be refused permission to install septic tanks and there will be an increasing demand for night soil aervices." said Mr Howes.
