NEW ARMY CLOTHING
Two Items For Trial
11l about a month several officers and men at the Southern Military District Headquarters in Christchurch will receive two new items of Army clothing which they will be required to wear for a trial period of a year. The items are | a newly-designed walking-out uniform and a greatcoat. The walking-out uniform is for other ranks and the greatcoat for both officers and men. When the year is up the clothing will be returned to Army Headquarters. Wellington, where it will be examined for wearing quality, comfort and material strength. The design and material quality of the walking-out uniform has been under examination by the New Zealand Army for some time with a view to producing a uniform for other ranks which can be used for both winter and summer wear. Already measurements of the nine selected men are being taken so that ■ these can be sent to Wellington where the uniforms will be tailored. It is believed that a similar number in each Army district have been chosen for the trial. So far no information has been received at the Southern Military District Headquarters about the design, style or quality of material to be used in either the greatcoat or the uniform, 'although both items are considered to be smarter and more comfortable than the present items in issue. Actupl production may be two years away as once the trial has been completed the whole subject has to be considered again by Army headquarters.
