Sportsman’s Notebook PROVINCIAL GOLF TITLES THIS WEEK-END
More than 80 entries, including several from outside the province, have been received for the Canterbury amateur golf championships. The championships, in senior, intermediate and junior grades, will be played at the Waimairi Beach course during the week-end. This will be the first time that Waimairi has been host for these titles. The holder of the senior championship, R. C. Murray, has not entered this year. Interesting entries from outside Christchurch include A. R. Timms (St. Clair) and G. Sutherland and L. G. Duffy from Oamaru. Sutherland, on 1, did well in the recent sponsored tournament at Paraparaumu. B. A. Colquhoun, now living in Timaru, will s’’o be a competitor. Leading local golfers to take part include R. E. Clements, J. G. Scott, C. J. Ward, R. K. Atkinson and B. L. Clegg. On Saturday will be played two qualifying rounds, and the top 16 in each grade will play in the championships on Sunday and Monday. For the others, handicap matches will be played. The present title-holders are Murray (senior), E. S. Henderson (Intermediate) and W. Walker (junior). The secretary of the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association (Mr G. W. A. Green) said yesterday that the Waimairi Beach course had been in good order, but that the recent hot weather would probably make it rather dry for the tournament. ¥ ¥ • Roller Hockey Two teams from the Canterbury Amateur Roller Skating Club will travel to Lower Hutt this week-end to take part in a roller hockey tournament with other teams throughout New Zealand. The A team, which includes several New Zealand representative hockey players, should prove a formidable opponent. The teams are: A Team: B. Bedwell. W. Brittain. B. Wray, G. Kinzett and W. Interman. B team: B. York, C. Hodge, M. Kelly, A. Hamilton and D. Fantham. With the national championships only weeks away, players will be on their toes to catch the selectors' eyes in the hope . that they will be nominated
for the trials to be held in Palmerston North during 1962. After these trials, the team for the world roller skating congress championships in Tokyo in October, 1962, will be chosen. ¥ ¥ * Decisive Win One of the easiest of victories in the Canterbury Cricket Association's competitions which began last Saturday, was that of Teachers’ College over St. Albans in the third B grade. Teachers’ College scored 215 for six wickets, declared (Leech 53. Sutton 38, Mason 35. Wood 31). St. Albans' was dismissed for 15, in its first innings and for 41 in its second.
