RACING Nerula Popular For Trentham First Leg

Kingdom has not been weighted with a chance of beating Nerula, for one, in the Watkins Handicap, the first leg of th© Trantham double on Saturday. Nerula finished strongly into second place close behind Fair Filou in the Wellington Handicap last week. He carried 94. Kingdom, carrying 741, battled into third place three lengths behind Nerula; he could do no more than hold his position from the home turn. Yet Kingdom will meet Nerula on worse terms on Saturday. .

Kingdom has gen, up 51b for running third. Nerula was given 31b for his second, a mueh better run in every way. On his weight, the Trenthem handicapper obviously expects Kingdom to Snake more improvement than Neftila over 11 furlongs. But over this distance Nerula p*rfom*d brilliantly for wins in the Parliamentary and Winter OW Handicap* at the Wellington winter meeting. The eonbir.ed effort* of several fresh hone* might help to take much of the gioee off Wellington Handicap form; but Nerula will probably remain favourite whatever the condition*. He is popular at Trentham, and Mi ability tinder all condition* is well recognised. Dashing Star, Spondulicks, v, laris, Sir Libra. False Credit, Quick Time, Kinross and High Born, are all recent winners. *nd all newcomers at the meeting. Spondulicks, a atablcmat* of Kingdom, wee over KN furlongs in the testing WMpukurau Cup at his last start. Of those that raced last week, Wfndvale Lad and Senor teem likely to make sharpest improvement. .Gauntlet, a close and very good second to Cheyenne over a mile last week, will take beating in the Awatea Handicap, second leg of the double. The distance of this race is eeven furlongs. It is probably Gauntlet's best distance. Roman Maid, from Riccarton, and Gold View, from Orari, are both good over seven furlongs and could improve on their performances over six in the Shorts Haodicap last week. Fields for the double ar* reviewed below.
