KEYS CUP GAME

University Wins

University beat Western by two goals to one in the final Keys Cup first division B soccer match of the season. This was played as curtainraiser to the main match at English Park. With this win University moved into fourth place cn the Keys Cup > table, with Western remaining at third. University’s display suggested that it could have been much higher placed.

University v. Western University scored twice in the first half, and definitely held the upper hand in this snell In the second half the students were struggling to hold Western out and for the last 15 minutes the players appeared very tired. C. Baker, in goal for University, gave a competent display. and his eleering in particular gave confidence. The f'lll-backs, A. Ross and J. Poborgh, were the mainstays of the defence, with Ross breaking up the Western attacks time and again. Of the half-backs C. Davidson sometimes tried to do too much. and G. Lewis was disappointing. N. Lambert gave an industrious display at lefthalf. and chased the ball more than did any of his t earn -mates. University fielded two centre-forwards in B. Fergus and W. Middleberg and. they both tried hard, although they occasionally got in each other's way. P. Grayson, at Inside-right showed surprising finesse in some moves, but C. Chin and D. Lee, cm the wings. were often behind the play. In the Western defence B. Sharpe (goal-keeper) and the full-backs, B. Bithell and J. Longmuir. were steady. Long, muir was his team's best Player. The hefty J. Wooders was hard to pass at centrehalf. and J. Young and N. Eggleston, on the sides, were competent. Young, in particular, gave a promising displav. Hing Yee Sue. last year’s Canterbury representative, showed all his trickery on the wing for Western, but he lacked support. At centreforward C Whitehead did some good but lost the crowd's sympathy with a display of petulence after the referee had awarded a goalkick against his team. S. Furlonger. M. White and D. Glass gave sporadic support. University’s goals were scored by Chin and Fergus, and Whitehead goaled for Western. Mr F. Dobbie was the referee.

North Shore Champion (NX Preu Associction) AUCKLAND, October 1. North Shore is the I9SI Auckland first division soccer champion. To have shared top place with North Shore, Mount Roskill needed a clear win against Mount Wellington yesterday. However, the score in this match 0-0.
