The whole business started as a prison “pen pal” romance. Giovanni was serving three years in Pisa prison for theft when he read about Angela in a newspaper. She was in gaol in Turin, together with her father, convicted of fraud, and her mother. Because of Angela's age, prison authorities have refused to disclose her name, or the charges on which she and her mother were convicted, the agency said. Giovanni began writing to Angela and romance bloomed. Then he got a transfer to Turin to be nearer his loved one. When he proposed. Angela’s father, in a cell down the hall, readily gave his consent and Father Ruggiero agreed to perform the ceremony. Giovanni and Angela, however, have to wait 20 months for their honeymoon, the Associated Press said. Angela is not due for release until March 27, 1963, and Giovanni is scheduled to get out 10 adays later.
