R. K. Macefield (Christchurch) and Miss J. Davidson (Avonside) have been given the top seedings in the men’s and women's singles of the Canterbury badminton championships to be played next week. Atkinson (Avonside) 1. * * » Keys Cup Soccer The Neerlandia team is very strongly placed to win the C. E. Keys Cup for the first division B in tile Canterbury Football Association’s competitions. With only two matches to play, Neerlandia has 15 points. High School Old Boys, with one match to play, have 13 points. Neerladia’s two matches are against Wanderers and City, the two bottom teams in the grade. When the first division was split into two sections, Neerlandia was behind University in points scored to that date. In the new grades all teams have started again from scratch, and Neerlandia is unbeaten in eight matches since then, with seven wins and one draw. ♦ ♦ » N.Z. League Team Of the seven games played by the New Zealand Rugby League team in England, three have been won and four lost. This is the Canterbury University club’s interfaculty competition. The first round was to have been played last Saturday, but was postponed because of .the bad weather. Five teams of four have entered, representing arts, science, engineering, law, and commerce. * # * Empire Games Pool An international competi-tion-standard swimming pool is the highlight of the £250,000 aquatic centre planned for the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth. The eight-lane pool will be 55yds long and 24yds wide, and will contain a £28,000 chlorination and filtration plant—the most modern in the Southern Hemisphere. A diving pool suitable for water polo matches is also planned. Other features of the aquatic centre include a U-shaped gallery with provision for covered seating for 5000, a complete turn-over of water every three hours (normal for most pools is six hours) and a compressed air system in the diving pool to create artificial ripples, thus making it easier for a diver to judge distance from the surface. * * * Rifle Shooting Christchurch shooters took the major placings at the Nelson small bore rifle championships, .held at Nelson on Saturday. E. Lockyear, aged 16, of the Avon club, won the A grade with a score of 298.21, and also took second place in the open championship. T. Wild took the major prize when he returned a score of 298.24, and H. Lockyear, of the Avon club, was third, with a score of 297.24. The women’s open was won by Mrs M. Thomson, of the United club.
