Mid-Canterbury Beats N. Otago

(NZ. Press Association) OAMARU, September 11. Fast, hard-racking forwards and a good full-back, A. Smith, enabled Mid-Canter-bury to beat North Otago, 8-0, at Oamara oh Saturday. Mid-Canterbury’s points, scored in the Mlwfc. half, came from a try by the first five-eighths, J. Sampson, converted by Smith, and a goal from a penalty kick by Smith. It was Mid-Canterbury’s fourth win of the season, and North Otago’s eighth consecutive defeat. Mid-Canterbury won the earlier match at Ashburton, 18-3. Rain fell intermittently during the match and the field of play on the grandstand side-line was a sea of mud, with other areas being churned up as the match progressed. Mid-Canterbury won because it handled the conditions better than did North Otago, keeping the ball on the ground to be hunted by the forwards. French Rugby “Gates”.— The “gate” for the French Rugby match against South Canterbury at Timaru on August 15 was £5043, of which the New Zeeland Rugby Union received £2905 15s 9d. The first match of the tour, against a combined team at Nelson, brought a “gate” of £4757, of which £3115 went to the New Zealand Rugby Union.
