Australia Wins Team Chop At Fair
Australia won the fourman team chop against New Zealand at the Industries Fair on Saturday in 3min Bseci More than £5OO in prize money was won by the Australian and New Zealand axemen, who chopped and sawed through logs weighing a total ot about 30.0001 b during the two-day carnival. The teams were:— Australia.—T. Kirk, D. Youd, J. Lavis, and R. Sherriff. New Zealand.—J. Creighton, I. Davidson, G. Hocquard, and W. Curtain. The prize for the competitor with most points in bush craft went to J. Lavis. Jigger board events were of special interest in the chapping programme. It was the first time that this chop had been seen in Canterbury. Sheriff won an exhibition jigger board event from Youd. A special ‘‘hard luck” prize was awarded to T. Carran, who managed to gain fourth place in an event after badly gapping bis axe when it fell on a nail. C. Riddle. 2; N. Walker. 3: R. McKinnon. 4. Twelve - inch Standing Chop.—-J. Hagan, 1: M. Antunavitch, 2; J. Lavis. 3; L. Giisenan, 4. Ten-inch Maiden Underhand Chop.—G. Hinks, 1; L. Fleurty, 2; W. McFadgen. 3.
Sixteen - 'inch Doublehanded Saw Cut.—M. Smith and P. Smith, 1; R. Chandler and C. Dalkie, 2; S. Donnelly and M. Carran, 3. Jiiglger Board Event. D. Youd. 1; R. Sherriff and D. Gibson, 2. In congratulating the prize winners, the chairman of the Industries Fair Committee (Mr J. R. Maddren) said a high standard of skill had been displayed. “You have done a tremendous amount to advance interest in this sport,” he said.
