Signs Of Spring Growth
Nearly three inches of ram fell in Christchurch in the first week of August causing surface flooding in some areas, according to the monthly weather report from the Meteorological Service at Harewood. The rest of the month was dry and sunny, and by the end of the month soil conditions were excellent Temperatures were higher than normal, and this, combined with the abundant sunshine, produced early spring growth. The greatest rainfall in 24 hours was 1.44 m recorded at : Harewood on August 4, while in the Botanic Gardens I.lBin were recorded. The lowest grass minimum temperature recorded at Harewood was 21 degrees on August 30, and the lowest grass minimum temperature at the Botanic Gardens was 22.3 degrees on August 28. The highest temperature at Harewood was 69.4 degrees on August 24. when the highest temperature at the Botanic Gardens, 72.3 degrees, was also recorded. There were 162 hours of sunshine in the month—l 6 hours above the August average.
