Kennoway Beats Fine Field In Handicap

Kennoway gave a grand display of trotting to wear down Chances Are and Bandsaw and gained a narrow win in the Spring Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday. Raced in partnership by the Eiffelton trainer, C. M. Laing, and Mrs Laing, Kennoway was driven by G. A. Laing.

The race was full of interest throughout. Bandsaw raced away to a long lead early. She was clear by eight lengths at the end of half a mile and increased her advantage to 10 lengths racing to the straight, where Ahumai, Thumberlina, Chances Are, Our Own, Superway, and Kennoway were showing up. Bandsaw began to shorten stride outside the furlong, but even so it seemed her advantage was great enough to enable her to win. Inside the haif-furlon.g Kennoway and Chances Are closed rapidly on her, with Kennoway doing best to beat Chances Are by a neck. Both the winner and runnerup trotted boldly over the final two furlongs. Bandsaw battled on 1 for third, half a length behind Chances Are, with two lengths back to the. favourite, Our, Own, which made ground in the straight. Ahumai was a head back fifth, two lengths in front of Superway, with Dianthus Girl next, clear of Thumberlina and' Welburn. Resistor, Front Line, Sure Patrick, Rojo, and Philonic made mistakes. Major Upset True Guest, a member of G. Cameron’s New Brighton team, caused a major upset when she won the H. E. Goggin Handicap. She was sent to the front at the end

of half a mile by the Auckland reinsman, F. Smith. True Guest raced to the straight in front of Robin Dundee, Leslie Grattan, Regal Duchess, and Mary Mavis. Half a furlong earlier there had been a mixup involving Meadow Scott, which came down, Yare and Latest, while Urrall was Robin Dundee, which had received a good run throughout, moved up to True Guest near the furlong post, but True Guest fought back gamely and won well by a length. Robin Dundee’s effort was sound and she should soon win. She was a length in front of the unlucky Urrall. which finished fast wide out from an almost impossible position at the straight entrance. f Regal Duchess Was a length and a half back fourth, ahead of Joylyn, Mary MaVis, Luck's Way, Leslie Grattan, and Calumite. Smart Effort Admit saved supporters of his stablemate, Axis, the more-favoured member of W. R. Butt's bracket in the Cambridge Handicap, when he overcame a slow start to win well. Axis was slow and was badly checked when Dieman Dan and First Song appeared to run out. Napoleon Hanover went to the front at -the end of three furlongs and a half, with Admit badly placed On the inside at the rear of the bunch.

Napoleon Hanover continued in front to the straight, where Young Betty, First Dieman, Implore. Ditfier, Johnny Thunder, and Admit were showing up. Napoleon Hanover looked likely to win at the furlong, but Admit responded gamely and beat him by a short length. Implore, which was three wide for much of the race, was a neck behind Napoleon Hanover in third place, with a neck to Parados, which made up ground a length in front of Real Dieman, with narrow margins to Johnny Thtlnder, First Dieman, Dither, Young Betty, and Heathmount. v Good Odds Kyle View, which paid £l6 9s 6d, caused a minor upset when she overcame a wide barrier draw to win the Introductory Handicap. She began fairly well and was seventh when the field settled down. She improved sharply in the back straight to join Del Nutt in front with four furlongs and a half to run.

Del Nuit and Kyle View were followed into the

straight by Hanover, Burns Rival, Company Road, Dandy Briar, which broke soon afterwards, and Smoke Screen. Kyle View soon shook off Del Nuit and ran on gamely to win by two lengths from Smoke Screen, which finished on solidly from the middle of the field at the half-mile. Del Nuit tried to lead over the last seven furlongs and a half but tired to third a length behind Smoke Screen, with half a length to Burns Rival, which had every chance after leading over the first half-mile. Hancove paced a useful race for fifth, ahead of Interior, Company Road, El Adem, and Sedway John Scott Easily John Scott, a firm favourite, did not have to give of his best to win the Oxford Handicap. A. M. Purdon had Mr W. J. Murray’s four-year-old handily placed throughout.

Gay Jillian and Robert Medoro forced most of the pace, with Robert Medoro on the outside. They were closely attended by John Scott, which was moving up. at the straight entrance, with Andromeda, Tracey’s Pal, Mina Lass, Arizona Gal, and Harbour Light next. John Scott was soon on terms with Robert Medoro apd did not have to be asked for an effort to win by a length and a half. Robert Medoro was unchallenged for second, being two lengths in front of Arizona Gal, which made up ground in the straight after being slow early. Andromeda tired inside the furlong and was two lengths back fourth, clear of Tracey’s Pal. with La Gloria, Gay Jillian and Harbour Light next.
