MAORI GAME

Western Beats Eastern (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, September 3. After the win over the French, Maori Rugby has renewed vigour. This was shown at Palmerston North Show Grounds on Saturday when Tai Hauauru (Western Maori) beat Tai Rawhiti ‘Eastern Maori) by 11 points to 8 to retain the Prince of Wales Cup. The game was played in the best traditions of Maori Rugby. Both teams passed the ball as much as possible and concentrated on keeping pdav open. The game was even throughout. Tai Hauauru gained its three-point lead only two minutes from the end when J. J. Nicholls, of Manawatu, cut through to clinch the match for the western team.

This is the fourth year in succession that Tai Hauauru has held the cup. It is its tenth win in cup matches. The players in the Tai Hauauru team come from Taranaki, King Country, Wanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua, Wellington, Bush and Wairarape. The Tai Rawhiti team was drawn from the Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bay, and East Coast unions.

For Tai Hauauru, tries were scored by Grbich, and Nicholls. Coffin kicked a conversion and a penalty goal. Tai Rawhiti’s points came from tries by Maniapoto (converted by Thomas) and a try by Ransley. The referee was Mr F. Gibson (Poverty Bay).
