EDUCATION OF MAORIS
Chairmanship Of Foundation (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, Sept. 3. A Maori should be chairman of the recently set up Maori Education Foundation. A recommendation to that effect was carried today by the plenary session of the Waiariki young Maori leaders' conference at Rotorua. The recommendation came from the earlier round table discussions by four groups. Later in the conference it was placed on record that the conference was grateful to the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Hanan) for establishing the foundation. A further recommendation dealing with the foundation was that one representative should be appointed to the board of control to represent the 32 Maori trust boards in New Zealand. Mr P. H. Leonard (Rotorua), chairman of the plenary session, said there was no provision for a trust boards’ represen'ative. Mrs M. Penfold said she disliked the idea of the boards being represented as parochialism could come about. The boards, she said, would be endeavouring to get amounts for their own areas. Mr Leonard said it was intended to have only one representative for the 32 boards. He could not see how parochialism could come about.
