RAIL LINK CUT

Hawke’s Bay Floods (N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, September 3. More heavy overnight rain increased the sodden state of Hawke’s Bay’s countryside on Saturday night. Patches of surface water add up to thousands of acres which for the last month have been unable to drain away or be absorbed because of frequently recurring rain. Last month there was nearly 7in of rain and another 2in has fallen since Friday. Rivers are high but within their banks and streams and drains are at capacity. Main roads are open for traffic but care is necessary and some country roads are closed by minor slips.

Most serious transport disruption is on the main railway line south between Norsewood and Kopua where a washout will not be repaired for three days. In the meantime road transport is being used for passengers and perishable and other urgent goods. The week-end rain has again meant difficulties for farmers whose sheep are lambing and losses are reported to be fairly heavy.
