Results Of Schools’ Painting Competition

■ r* l The subject for the competition was “Integrity” and the judges reported that many of the entries showed a deep understanding of the subject. The three judges were Mr G. S. Troup, president of the Christchurch branch of the United Nations Association, Mr A. Brooke, secretary of the Canterbury Society of Arts, and Miss M. Ruddle, of the arts and crafts division of the Education Department in Christchurch. They were unanimous in awarding the highest praise to the entries of Prudence Williams and Susan Worthington, of Marsden School. Each school submitted five entries for the main competition, but single entries were received for the travelling exhibition to be held in Japan.

The selected paintings will be on display with the best 30 paintings in the Japanese school paintong competition. The Japanese children who have had their paintings accepted for the exhibition will each receive a New Zealand picture, and the New Zealand children will in turn receive Japanese paintings. The full interpretation of integrity, says an official report of the competition, came from P Anderson, aged 14, of New Plymouth Boys’ High School. He painted a youth struggling up towards the light and successfully breaking through restraining Vines labelled greed, jealousy, and hatred.

More religious ideas were expressed in this year's competition than in previous years. A painted church interior showing a clergyman reading the Scriptures to a crowded congregation was produced by Murray Bernard. of Naenae College. In clear simple line and wash, G. Williams, of Mount RoskiH Grammar School, Painted the heads of a judge, a dergyman, and a nurse against a cross in the background.
