GOOD DAY’S SHEARING

Tally Of 400 Ewes

A 29-year-old Mid-Canter-burv shearer. Mr A. J. Tate, of Tinwald, shore 400 heavy Romney-Corriedale cross inlamb ewes in a nine-hour working day at the shed of Mr E. H. Clibborn at Lyndhurst last week. Mr Tate, who has been shearing for nine years, did a two-week training course under Mr Godfrey .Bowen at Lincoln after he had done one season and he now uses what he believes to be the Bowen technioue. Mr Bowen on January 6 this year set what was claimed to be a new world record when he shore 463 Cheviot cross s H eep in a nine-hour day at Pukatutu station. 16 miles from Hastings. The Mid - Canterbury shearer, who shears at least '5.000 sheen, including lambs, in a season, shore in four •wo and a quarter hour runs last week, completing the day with a run of about 110. The ewes, which were clipping about 91b to 101 b of wool, compared with about 71b for the Cheviot cross handled by Mr Bowen in January, had been crutched and bellied about a month before they were shorn. Mr Tate did his own catching and worked under normal shed conditions. Last year in the same shed Mr Tate shore 350 sheen in a dav and on two or three occasions he has shorn 300 sheep in a day.
