BIG FIRE AT TE PUKE
Five Shops Damaged (N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA, April 27. Five main-street shops and their contents were seriously damaged by fire at Te Puke early this morning, while a hall behind them was completely destroyed. It is thought that the fire started in the middle of -the block some time before 3 am. It was first noticed by Mr T. A. Baikie, a tearooms proprietor, who gave the alarm. At the height of the fire, flames were leaping 30ft into the air above the shops, and hundreds of persons, awakened by the fire siren and attracted to the scene, watched while the Te Puke Fire Brigade fought to get the blaze under control.
