NELSON TOMATOES IN DEMAND
Short Supplies In Many Centres (From Our Own Reporter) NELSON, December 22. Tomatoes are in short supply in many centres of New Zealand, although there are adequate supplies available on the Nelson market. Consignments have been sent from Nelson as far north as Auckland this year, and good prices have been realised. A spokesman for the tomatogrowing industry said this afternoon that a combination of events had led to short supplies in many centres. In Canterbury, cold weather had held back the ripening of crops; floods in Hawke’s Bay had seriously jeopardised outdoor crops, and in Auckland it had not been a good season, he said. There has been a particularly heavy demand for green tomatoes in the North Island, and. because of this, the usual supply of red tomatoes in Nelson has not been available.
