CANTERBURY’S RECORD
10 Wins In 11 Contests The series of races to be sailed on Waitemata harbour in the New Year by New Zealand’s top R class centre-board dinghies will be the eleventh. With one exception, Canterbury craft have taken top placings. This season eight boats will be sent to Auckland by the Canterbury R. Class Squadron. The list of previous contest results is as follows: 1951 (Estuary)—Petite (E. Rountree and J. Douglas). 1952 (Estuary)—Hectic (D. Harrison and W. Harrison). 1953 (Charteris Bay)—Hectic—(C. Papps and B. Taylor). 1954 (Lyttelton)—Gesture (P. Mander and J. Nicholson). 1955 (Estuary)—Gesture (W. Nicholson and J. Nicholson). 1956 (Lyttelton)—Salaam (P. Mander and J. Cropp). 1957 - (Lyttelton)—lmpulse (G. Mander and D. Mander). 1958 (Wellington)—Salaam (P. Mander and J. Cropp). 1959 (Auckland)—Frenzy (G. Mander and J. Croppl. 1960 (Lyttelton)—Chamois (G. Gibbs and C. Dalziel). Apart from Chamois which came from Wellington, all the other boats were from Canterbury. Much of the success of the R class has been caused by the lack of restrictive design. In general, a boat qualified if it was 12ft 9in in length and had a stinulated sail area. There are more than 200 of the type registered throughout the Dominion, and the register increases every week.
