RACING Come On Boy Beats Milers At Omoto

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. December 1. Come On Boy, seventh favourite in a field of 10. caused a major upset in the Hannan Memorial Handicap, main event and first leg of the off-course double, at Greymouth yesterday. Come On Boy was first away from a delayed start, took the lead after a furlong and galloped freely all the way to win untested by a length and a half. The favourite. Rayspar, which was handy all the way and was second into the straight, battled on for second a length clear of Gaytana. Skylight, another outsider, was half a length away fourth.

Come On Boy is a six-year-old gelding v by Defaulter from Prometheum. owned and trained at Blackball by Mr T. Shadbolt. Yesterday's win was at his third attempt this season. At his last start, nearly two months ago. he ran second at Reefton to London Tower, one of the unplaced runners yesterday. Volterra, owned and trained at Westport, completed the double by winning the Ahaura Hack Handicap. The outsider of nine runners. Volterra won by a neck from Slatey in a battling finish over the last furlong. With Come On Boy in the double. Volterra paid £l9B 16s for £l. Volterra is a five-year-old mare by Targui from Lady Heather, owned and trained by Messrs A. G. Grant and W. J. James. The weather for the first day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s summer meeting was fine and the track was fast. Come On Boy’s time of Imin 39 3-ssec, for the mile of the Hannan Memorial was one of the best recorded on the track for years.

On-course the totalisator handled a total of £16.912 10s. including £793 on the double, compared with £15.448 last year. Come On Boy Away Well

Several runners were restless at the barrier in the Hannan Memorial Handicap and it was some minutes before the field was lined up. Ocean Melody refused to come into line and was sent to the outside.

Come On Boy was first out and with a round to go he was shading Rayspar. Asoka and Skyrain were next, ahead of Appreciate and London Tower. Skylight, Ocean Melody and Gaytana followed them and King Lyn was last.

At the half-mile Come On Boy was still Clear of Skylight. Asoka and Rayspar were handy and Gaytana was beginning to improve.

Skylight joined Come On Boy for a few strides going past the

three furlongs but coming to the two and a-ha If. Come On Boy was a length clear again

Come On Boy was clear into the straight, from Rayspar. Gaytana and Skylight. London Tower and Ocean Melody were close up and King Lyn was improving Conic On Boy kept up a vigorous run to the post and won without much difficulty by a length and a-half. A length separated Rayspar from the third horse. Gaytana. and there was half a length to Skylight. London Tower was fifth, just beating King Lyn. Ocean Melody, Asoka and Appreciate wore next- and Skyrain was last. Volterra by Half a Neck

Volterra and Slatey fought out a battling finish in the second leg of the ofT-course double, the Ahaura Hack Handicap. Slatey. the pacemaker, was about threequarters of a length clear at the furlong, but Volterra wore him down and got up almost in the last stride to win by half a neck.

A length away there was almost as close a finish for third between Appreciation and Harkville. A long neck separated these two.

Abu El Saad was the slowest away. Slatey got out smartly and led past the stands from Pyrites. Arjamand. Volterra Alonzing and Arc Flight.

Slatey and Volterra were together in the lead at the halfmile, a length clear of Alonzing. Arjamand and Pyrites. Volterra and Slatey were clear at the three furlongs and the others were bunched behind them. Slatey went ahead slightly rounding the turn but Volterra came again and headed him just short of the post. Appreciation and Harkville were next, then came Alonzing. followed by Arjamand. The win favourite. Pyrites, was unable to come on and finished seventh. Abu el Saad was last.
