THE HAMILTON JET-POWERED BARGE, which has been commissioned by the Ministry of Works for use in the Haast river, South Westland, shown during trials on the Waimakariri. It exceeds 22 miles an hour, and carries more than two tons. Designed and built locally, the 21ft barge has a beam of 8ft. It travelled upstream from the Waimakariri Gorge bridge to the Otarama Gorge, a distance of about 15 miles, including river shallows of a few inches. Ministry of Works officials on board included the senior mechanical engineer in Christchurch, Mr N. C. Dennison. This is the largest powered craft to travel in the upper reaches of the Waimakariri.
