ITALIAN DAVIS CUP TEAM

Drobny Refuses Captaincy (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Dec. 4. The former Wimbledon champion, J. Drobny, will not captain the Italian Davis Cup team in next week’s inter-zone final against the United States, he said yesterday. Drobny, who is manager of the Italian team, said today he had cabled the Italian Tennis Federation informing them that he could not accept the captaincy. Davis Cup regulations bar players from competing for more than one nation except under certain special conditions. Drobny said he would be ineligible to captain Italy because he has played Davis Cup tennis for Czechoslovakia.

“I don’t want to risk any more arguments,” he. said. “We are here to play tennis, not to argue.” Drobny discussed the regulations with the secretary of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia yesterday. The president (Mr N. Strange) said: “The rules are obscure on this point. We may hold a meeting to discuss the regulations and see if we can find out exactly where Drobny stands.” Drobny said; "If we beat America, Vanni Canapele is waiting in' Italy to catch the next plane to Sydney for the challenge round against Australia.” Canapele, a former Italian Davis Cup player, captained the team in Europe this year.
