Yachts Capsized By Squalls At Auckland
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 4. Heavy squalls over the Auckland harbour during the week-end interfered with yacht racing. Many craft capsized or broke equipment and official rescue launches and private launches joined l in a major salvaging operation. The hardest-hit fleet was the 18-footer flying squadron. In a trial in south-westerly squalls of up to 30 knots on Saturday, nine boats started and only three finished. Three capsized, one broke its rudder, one broke its mast, and one had its centreboard case collapse. It filled up with water and the crew swam.
The squadron's own patrol boat could not handle all the casualties and private pleasure launches rescued several crews and towed the yachts home. During the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s M-class race, the Mahura, a new boat hit a buoy, ripped away part of the deck, and capsized. The Mirage snapped a shroud and retired before the mast broke. In an Idlealong trial off Westhaven today, two craft capsized — one purposely. Its spinnaker wrapped around the top of the mast and the only way the skipper could reach it before it did any damage was to capsize his yacht.
