HANDICAPPED CHILDREN

Concert Given By School’s Pupils A mimed version of “Peter and the Wolf” was one of the highlights of a concert held by the Canterbury branch of the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Parents’ Association. Others items —presented by senior pupils of the intellectually handicapped children’s school—were folk dancing, singing, and percussion playing. A magician, a puppet show, items by the Burwood Skiffle Band, the Caroline Singers, and piano and piano accordion items were also included. > An interesting display of work done by senior pupils of the school was seen during the evening. Embroidery, patchwork, woodwork, mop heads made from scraps of coloured wool, and soft toys were featured. Special novelties were rag dolls —with a difference. They were made from tiny “wheels” of cloth, sewn together and strung on a wool frame. Articles made from rope included a toy horse, and sewing holdalls with a drawstring top made of bright material. Tins of sweets were camouflaged with cotton wool snowmen.

The goods were displayed on a sales table, which included sweets, flowers, and pots of jam. A Christmas tea for senior pupils was held earlier in the evening, with the presentation of gifts from the Christmas tree. After the concert, there was a social hour for pupils, parents, and friends.
