LAWN TENNIS Two Teams Unbeaten In Men’s Contest

Only two teams. North Linwood, last season’s winner and United, remained unbeaten in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's

senior men’s competition after the second day's play at Wilding Park on Saturday.

Two of the contests were very close. Opawa lived up to its reputation of not winning or losing on matches but rather on sets or games. On the first day it lost by 7 sets to 8 but on Saturday it beat Elmwood by 8 sets to 7. The match between Woolston and University had to be decided on games and Universiy won. 77-66. The other two contests were more clear-cut. North Linwood beat Cashmere by 4 matches to 2 and United beat the new Edgeware side by 4 matches to 2. However, the North Linwood-Cash-mere contest had little chance of being close because Cashmere began with the handicap of having to default one of its doubles because a player was late. The points are:—North Linwood 2, United 2, Woolston 1,. University 1. Opawa 1, Elmwood 0. Cashmere 0. Edgeware 0. Elmwood and Edgeware are one match behind from the first round because Edgeware played the elm ination contest with St. Albans that day. Moss v. Thom By far the most interest in individual matches was in the meeting between G. Moss, top man for Opawa. and W. Thom, who leads the Elmwood team. In a semi-final of the Show weekend tournament. Moss beat Thom who has recently returned from his overseas tour, 6-4. 6-0, but on Saturday, an improved Thom gave the Opawa player his sternest opposition so far this season. Moss won, 6-2, 9-7. In the first set of this centrecourt match it looked as if Thom would be just as convincingly and as quickly disposed of as he had been at Show week-end and as Moss’s other opponents have been this season. But the second set was different. Up to then, although his stroking was smooth as usual, Thom had lacked pace and depth against Moss but he gradually gained it and in this second set Moss looked for the only time this season as if he might lose control and it seemed to rattle him somewhat. His cries of anguish were not particularly appreciated by some of those who had to listen to them. Thom kept the ball up to him better and made some fine sorties to the net. Moss made more errors than he has of late but eventually he did not let this go far enough to lose his first set for the season. They went through the set winning alternate games and. strangely enough, they were not the games on their own services (both had several doubles faults).; Moss had a match point when he led, 7-6. but lost the game. He eventually took his own service to win the set, 9-7. Drop Shots In another top match of interest, A. D. L. Hunter (United) beat B. Crofts, the leader of the new Edge ware team, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. After being well beaten in the first set, Hunter gradually moulded play to his own liking. It was not a fast match but Hunter wore Crofts down by alternating deep shots and lobs with little drop shots just over the net. It was a long struggle and Crofts’s resistance began to lessen. In the same contest, the stylish L Martin gained one of his best wins when he beat A. L. Blackwell, 10-8, 7-5. but the most remarkable match was a doubles in which Crofts and T. Harneiss beat Hunter and Blackwell, 6-0, 6-1. The United pair seldom loses a doubles, let alone by such a score. C. G. Judge, another player who has returned from an overseas tennis trip, atoned for his lack of form in the Show week-end tournament with a fine win over the top man for Woolston, B. Aldridge, 6-0, 6-1. Judge’s strong service and fine ground strokes were at their best. G. A. Burton, top for North Linwood, showed that he is still one of the hardest club players to beat. No player’s reputation overawes Burton and beat the sound B. J. Shirlaw (Cashmere), 8-6, 2-6, 6-3, by playing for the lines throughout. Women’s Competition In the women’s competition, which is divided into sections, two teams Cashmere and Fern-side-Kaiapoi, a new team from the North Canterbury sub-association, are also unbeaten. In the second round on Saturday, Cashmere, last season’s winners, beat St. Albans without the loss of a match and FernsideKaiapoi beat Shirley by the same score. In the other matches Avonside beat University by 4 matches to 1, and Fendalton, another new team, beat United by 4 matches to 2. The points are:—Section I: Cashmere 2, Avonside 1, St. Albans 1, University 0. Section II: Femside-Kaiapoi 2, United 1, Fendalton 1, Shirley 0. The top Cashmere player. Miss J. Davidson, who is also top for Canterbury, had little difficulty in beating Mrs B. Allen (St. Albans), 6-1, 6-1. Miss Davidson was much too strong of shot for her opponent but her backhand was still a very varied shot. Mrs Allen was at times able to make Miss Davidson run by placing her ground shots well but she could not maintain the attack. It was unfortunate that the match between Mrs G. Middelberg (University) and Mrs P. I Leopold (Avonside)* could not be I completed because the two are ! the main candidates for second I position on the women's ladder.l ' In a ranking match last week,l Mrs Middelberg beat Mrs Leopold convincingly but she was having a harder task on Saturday when she got cramp in a leg with the score at 6-2, 5-6. As the match would have no effect on the teams’result the players decided not to continue. Results: — SENIOR MEN Opawa v. Elmwood Singles.—G. Moss beat W. Thom. 6-2, 9-7; R. Blunt lost to A.
