PRESERVATION OF ESTUARY
“Should Not Become A Cesspool”
The estuary of the Heathcote and Avon rivers should be preserved as a playground and not be allowed to degenerate into a cesspool, the member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr N. E. Kirk) said on Saturday. It was important to both yachtsmen and to Christchurch city that this splendid waterway should be preserved, he said, when speaking at the opening dav ceremony of the Mount Pleasant Boating Club. Christchurch was growing very fast and there were many problems connected with its development: already there were warning signs that people needed to be mindful the estuary should not be .permitted to “become some sort of cesspool.” “We want to preserve it clean and healthy for sportsmen. It is a problem not beyond solution. There are many problems associated with the growth of Christchurch which could cost us some of the things we take for granted. The estuary is one,” he said. The Mount Pleasant season was declared open by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning). The commodore (Mr S; E. Loader) told Mr Manning the club was grateful for the help of the city reserves department for improving the surroundings of the pavilion, car park, and rigging areas.
