Thunderstorms Disrupt Soccer In Britain

LONDON, August 27. Sudden, violent thunderstorms Mt the North of England this afternoon and played havoc with Soccer matches. The day’s biggest game—the First Division match between Manchester City and Manchester United—was abandoned after 63 minutes with the score at 2-3. Floodlights were turned on as a thunderstorm broke almost directly over the ground at the start of the second half. The ground became waterlogged in minutes, and, as tackling had become dangerous, the referee called the game off. Play was suspended for several minutes in the Second. Division game between Leeds United and Rotherham, which Leeds won 2-1.
There was a four-minute interruption at Doncaster, where Crystal Palace beat Doncaster Rovers 5-1 in the Fourth Division. Another Fourth Division game, Accrington v. York, was abandoned after 83 minutes, with York ahead 2-1. Results were:— ENGLISH LEAGUE Division I Arsenal 3, Nottingham Forest 0: Birmingham 1.
