ARMS FACTORY EXPLOSION
Three Buildings Demolished (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, June 22 Houses for 20 miles around were shaken and three factory buildings demolished in a disastrous arms factory explosion in Scotland today Seven men were killed and three slightly injured in the explosion in the nitro-glycerine department at the Royal Ordnance Factory, Bishopton (Renfrewshire), Britain’s biggest explosives plant. Other buildings were badly damaged as the blast sent a huge mushroom cloud of orangecoloured smoke high in the air. Windows in houses a mile awa; on the main GlasgowGreenock road were shattered.
An hour after the explosion flames were still leaping from one of the buildings in the factory grounds. A War Office sookesman said an inquiry would be held tomorrow.
