PAYMENTS FOR ROYALTIES
Criticism Of N.Z. Attitude
The “rigid control” over royalty payments by New Zealand firms to United Kingdom manufacturers was criticised in Christchurch by the United Kingdom Trade Commissioner, Mr M. E. Browne. He told, Christchurch businessmen that the United Kingdom regarded this attitude as “an effort to buy our industrial research on the cheap.
“Scientific and technical knowhow is expensive to acquire and we expect a fair return. Your manufacturers are well aware of the advantages of such royalty agreements.” Mr Browne also claimed that some New Zealand manufacturers, sheltered by import licensing, were imitating British patterns and designs—“not a practice normally associated with British manufacturers (using British in the widest sense).”
