LAWN TENNIS SHOCK DEFEAT OF MRS KORMOCZY

Otway In Third Round Of Men’s Singles

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

LONDON, June 22

The first major upset of the Wimbledon championships came with the shock defeat of the 38-year-old seeded Hungarian, Mrs Suzy Kormoczy, who was beaten by the captain of the United States Wightman Cup team, 25-year-old Janet Hopps, 6-3, 3-6, 9-7, in the second round of the women’s singles. Kurt Nielsen, the 32-year-old Dane, who reached the men’s singles final in 1953 and 1955 when unseeded, came from behind to beat Britain’s lefthander, Billy Knight, in five exciting sets.

For New Zealand, M. A. Otway won in the second round of the men’s singles, but L. A. Gerrard and J. R. McDonald were beaten. Miss Ruia Morrison won her second round match in the women's singles. Mrs Kormoczy, almost unbeatable on European hardcourts, was never happy on the fast turf. She held on to 7-all in the deciding set but Miss Hopps, moving into the net, broke through in the fifteenth game and held service for the match. Against Nielsen, Knight seemed to have the match won when in the grilling heat he led two sets to one and was 5-3 in the fourth. But Nielsen broke back to 5-all. After a tense fluctuating duel the Dane finally broke through in the twentieth game to force a deciding set. Nielsen got away to a 3-1 lead in the final set and clung tenaciously to clinch victory in the ninth game. Wimbledon had its biggest crowd of the week and continuing hot humid weather. A large crowd on the number one court saw the Australian, R. Laver, runner-up last year, produce a fine array of powerful shots to crush the American, H. Flam 6-2. 6-2, 6-2 Like Laver, Chile’s L. Ayala and the American, E. Buchholz, were seeded men in a hurry today. Ayala defeated the Italian. S. Tacchini 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 with a series of spins, drop shots and subtle angles. The talented 19-year-old Buchholz beat the American marine, J. Cranston 6-4. 6-3, 6-1. Italian Wins Another fairly comfortable seeded winner was the Italian star, N. Pietrangeli, who beat the young Australian, M. Mulligan 6-1, 6-4, 9-7. New Zealand’s L. Gerrard was knocked out in a second round match with the Mexican, R. H. Osuna, who won in straight sets 6-4, 8-6, 6-2. Otway moved into the’ third round with a decisive straight sets win over the Jugoslav, N. Pilic. Britain’s M. Sangster triumphed over J. R. McDonald in four sets after losing the third 2-6. Miss Morrison easily moved into the third round of the women’s singles with a 6-1. 6-0 win over Miss D Starkie. of Britain. Krishnan’s Revenge In a match of high quality, R. Krishnan, India's top player, gained a revenge win over A. Gimeno, of Spain, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3, on the centre court. The tall Spaniard, who beat the Indian at Queen’s Club last week, battled to the last point. Seven of the nine games in the final set went to deuce before iGishnan won. Another seeded man under pressure was the Australian, R. Emerson, who won in five sets against Czechoslovakia's J Javorsky, after losing the first two sets.
