RACING Fourth Successive Win For N.Z.-Bred Gelding

(Australian Correspondent N.Z.P.AJ

. SYDNEY. Black Hawk won his fourth successive race on Saturday when he had a narrow victory over Bold Pilot and Caybros in the June Handicap at Warwick Farm, but in spite of the good form—his first win in open company—the former New Zealand horse may not be taken to Brisbane for the Doomben Cup, in which he is handicapped on the minimum weight of 7-0. His trainer, C. Ryan, would be happy enough taking Black Hawk northward, but the owners are not particularly keen about taking on company too strong at this stage. On Saturday Black Hawk, an odds on favourite, looked like failing to catch the leader Bold Pilot, but an amazing run in the last 50 yards or less brought him victory. The field was not particularly strong but it was strong enough to test a horse coming into open company for the first time.

Black Hawk again dropped out of the running in the early stages, and this trait in his galloping would be against him on the Doomben track.

Waipari Beaten In Brisbane, the New Zealand horse. Waipari, was beaten in the Moreton Handicap (11 furlongs) by the Brisbane three-year-old Midswain, which at his previous start had failed badly under 8-10 in the Queensland St. Leger. Midswain, this time, carried 7-1 and he made a bold showing under the light weight. Waipari had 8-7 and looked a winner when in the concluding stages he ran up to Midswain, but the three-year-old found another effort right on the post and snatched the win. -

However, it was a good performance by Waipari and suggests that the best has not been, seen of him in the present compaign. An impressive performance in Melbourne was the win by Trio in the second division of the Minook Two-year-old Handicap, run over seven furlongs at Caulfield. Trio is by Khorassan from Merry Widow and is trained by Basil Conaghan. In the early part of the race Trio was a long way back in the big field. .

Then, near the half-mile. Trio moved up, to be second on the turn into the straight and win convincingly after taking charge with about a furlong remaining.

Riding Record The jockey. Neville Sellwood, has created a riding record for the Sydney racing tracks. His success on Tudor House at Warwick Farm on Saturday was his 84th win in Sydney. Sellwood’s previous highest tally for the metropolitan area was 77. Counting wins in Melbourne and in Brisbane, Sellwood has had 104 successes this season, and if his record at country meetings is counted his tally is 113. The greatest number of wins in a season was recorded by the former jockey Bill Cook, who one season won 126 races, but many of those wins were at big country meetings which Cook frequently attended, and which receive very scant attention from Sellwood.
