SOUTHLAND HORSES
Campaign Plans
In North
“The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. June 23.
Melodic, which will race at Trentham next month, will be taken through to Riccarton next Monday, when the teams of T. E. Pankhurst and D. V. and R. F. Pankhurst will also move north. Training operations at the Southland course have been at a standstill, because the track is flooded after heavy rain last week-end. Melodic has been entered for the first day of the South Canterbury meeting, but it is unlikely he will run. He will be quartered at Riccarton before going on to Trentham. A rider has not been engaged for him at Wellington. T. E. Pankhurst Intends racing both Janama, which has been entered for the big steeplechases each day, and the veteran Nairn Bridge, a winner at Wingatui. at the Wellington meeting. Naim Bridge may also race at Washdyke on the way north. They will leave on Monday.
Another Wingatui winner. Hundred Grand, whose latest form on heavy tracks has been useful, will race at Trentham. The half-brother to Cheerio looks a mudlark of some use. D. V. and R. F. Pankhurst also have West Bound. Lord Garnish, and Waikiwi Star entered at the South Canterbury meeting. They will go north to Oamaru on Monday. Vamoose and Shangri-La are other Southland horses engaged in the main flat events at Trentham. and they are also down to race at Washdyke. Shangri-La has had a busy season’s racing and she has been required to carry a lot of weight in her latest racing. She will no doubt get some relief in the weights in the stronger fields she will be meeting at Wellington.
