ACCIDENTS AT SEA
Search And Rescue Report Tabled
(New Zealand Prest Association) WELLINGTON, June 23.
The Search and Rescue Organisation was in full operation 13 times for marine accidents during the last year, according to the Marine Department report tabled in the House of Representatives by the Minister of Marine (Mr Fox).
The most tragic incidents were the loss of the Holmglen with 15 men and the fishing vessel Reo Moana with three men. Of the 11 other occasions when the organisation was called out, two concerned dinghies or canoes in difficulties off the coast, eight concerned launches or yachts missing or in distress during ocean passages (one yacht three times), and one involved investigation of distress flares. The educational policy for the safety of users of small craft undertaken by the department had continued and advice on safety precautions had been given through radio talks, department notices and instruction by yacht clubs.
The pre-sailing form for use by yachts proceeding on extended voyages has proved its worth in several incidents, says the report.
