1000 Subjects To Be Set Out This Year
One of the biggest and most varied planting programmes undertaken on one site in one season in Christchurch is now being started by the Waimairi County Council at Jellie Park. The list includes nearly 1000 subjects ranging from banks of azaleas to English specimen trees. The ground development of Jellie Park is almost complete. A good sole of grass has been established over all areas, paths are laid, the main sports grounds are in use, and the artificial lakes (with their island stage be-
low a natural amphitheatre) have been formed. This work, involving a huge contract for earth moving, cost about £12,000. Major features shown on the plan but still to be installed when finance permits include the lido swimming pool with associated paddling and diving pools, the tea kiosk bridging the lake, and various games courts. A good deal of planting has already been done, including a belt of shelter trees along the boundary nearest Memorial avenue (bottom of picture) and specimen trees throughout the area. This season’s programme will absorb the whole of the £5OO given for the purpose by Mr W. S. MacGibbon.
