ODD ACCIDENT ON NORTH ROAD
Two Men Suffer Injuries
A man climbing out of a manhole at the corner of Sawyers Arms road and the Main North road at 5.45 p.m. yesterday was struck by a car and suffered head and upper limb injuries. Shortly after, while police were taking measurements of the accident, a passing car smashed into the rear of the firs* car and rolled over. A passenger in this car suffered head injuries.
The workman was Mr ViVian George Kearney, aged 52, of 250 Braley avenue, an employee of the Christchurch Drainage Board. The passenger in the second car was Mr Ronald Hunter Battersby. aged 18, of 699 Main North road. Belfast. Mr Kearney, a flusher, was climbing out of the manhole after completing a job, when a car driven by Mr Edwin Clarence Eden, aged 47, of 246 Main North road, struck him. It was shortly after this, while police were working on the accident, that a second car, driven by Mr Anthony Charles Cawdry. of 4 Hornbrook street, with Mr Battersby as a passenger, and travelling towards Belfast, ran into the rear of Mr Eden's car and rolled over.
Both the injured men were taken by ambulance to Christchurch Public Hospital and admitted. Their conditions last night were fairly satisfactory.
