POPULATION LEAD
Christchurch Has 151,000 Christchurch is still in the lead as the New Zealand city with the most people living in the City Council area, according ;to the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker}. Estimates give Christchurch a 151,500 population in the City Council area, followed by Auckland with 141,900, Wellington 123,000, Dunedin 72,400. Lower Hutt 53,000, Hamilton 40,700 and Palmerston North 39,300. Waimairi, making up a a big section of the Christchurch urban area, with an estimated 34,900 people living in it, has the second biggest county population in the country.
Leading the counties is Waitemata with an estimated population of 43,100. This county regularly takes most of the increase in the Auckland area.
Timaru’s urban population rose during the year to 20,100, ahead of Nelson with 24,200 people living there. Canterbury’s Figure Canterbury’s population rose to 336,705,' and the combined total population of the province along with Marlborough, Nelson and Westland is 458,005.
Around Christchurch, Paparua’s population rose to 16,650, Riccarton’s to 7930, Heathcote’s to 5880, Lyttelton’s to 3600, Kaiapoi's to 3140 and Halswell’s to 2230. Ashburton’s town population went up to 11,200, while an estimated 12,050 live in the surrounding county. Nelson’s city population rose to 22,700, Blenheim’S to 11,500. Greymouth’s to 9030, Westp6rt*S to 5590 and Picton'f to 2170.
