Stole Radios From Customs Strongroom
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 22.
Three young public servants were imprisoned by Mr J. S. Hanna. S.M., when they appeared for sentence today for their parts in the theft and subsequent disposal of 30 transistor radios, a camera, binoculars and 3000-cigar-ettes from the Customs Department strongroom in Waterloo quay. Edward Casely Inversen, aged 21, a Customs Department clerk, was sent to prison for nine months on each of two charges of breaking and entering and theft.
Jointly charged with him on those two counts, Malcolm Lindsay Hay, aged 24. a clerk, was sent to prison for six months, and they were both ordered to make restitution of £45 ss. Ronald Owen Brooker, aged 23. a clerk, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on one charge of receiving £384 worth of stolen transistor radios, binoculars and a camera from Iversen. For the defence, Mr G. C. Kent said that all three men had splendid records in the respective Government department which they had served. All had good educations, two having passed university entrance.
