NEW SPELLING SYSTEM

80,000 Textbooks Sold So Far

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 22.

Primary school teachers have bought up the fourth impression of a new spelling book published by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research early this year. Pioneering a new system of spelling teaching in New Zealand, the book, at present published only for standard one pupils, gives an alphabetical list of 1200 words—the basic words used by children in essays. Originally estimating to sell 30,000 in three years, the council has in six months sold 80,000 and the demand for more advanced lists is great. Standard 2 books, giving 2700 words, are on the presses. One teacher said today: “Eve never seen my children so keen on spelling.” The publication is at present being studied in Canada, Australia, Rhodesia and other African states.

The book was largely prepared and written by an education lecturer at Auckland University, Dr. Gordon Arvidson.
