HORNBY AREA SEWERAGE
Subdivisions’ Scheme
A scheme for the sewerage of four private subdivisions in Hornby which will provide 811 sections was approved in principle by the Christchurch Drainage Board on Tuesday evening.
If any other reasonable means of disposal were possible, disposal by septic tank and soakage of effluent into the ground was undesirable, a special committee reported. Its effectiveness was not sure, particularly if a long period, as at Hornby, was involved. The area became polluted and its later use for residential sites was in doubt. None of the system could be salvaged when sewers were available. If areas were extensive, the ground water might be contaminated.
As a result of that, and possibly other objections, the Health Department was likely to require secondary treatment of tank effluent.
It seemed desirable to arrange for the sewage from the areas to be discharged into the board’s system if possible, the committee said. It seemed this might be done by the provision of a lumping station in Stevensons’ block with a gravity sewer in Aymes road, Shands road, Seymour road and the Main South road.
The sewers could provide connexions for about 190 sections en route and a probable school. The cost of the sewers would be repayable to the subdividers when loan monies for the area became available, as they would then become part of the permanent reticulation system.
An approximate cost of the proposal was £34,000. As the sewer would provide for the 190 sections outside the subdivision, the board agreed to contribute towards the cost oa a proportionate basis with the other users.
