MALAYAN HEAD-DRESS WORN BY NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS.—The Band of the 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, on parade at Taiping, North Malaya. The bandsmen are believed to be the first non-Malayan troops to wear the songkok (national hat of Malaya). Their pew uniform is composed of a scarlet songkok trimmed with gold, a white jacket with black and white belt (black and white are the battalion’s colours), and dark blue trousers with a red stripe.
