Phenomenal Tidal Changes At Lyttelton During Tsunami
The freak tidal movements in Lyttelton Harbour on May 23 and May 24 were recorded by the automatic tide gauge at the end of the No. 1 breastwork jetty.
The tide’s ebb and flow of 19ft 3in in one hour, the normal rise and fall being 6ft 3in every six hours and 15 minutes, was without parallel. On the afternoon of May 26, when a general alert was issued on the east coast because of the projected arrival of a seismic wave from Chile and the port was closed, the tide rose swiftly to within two inches and a-half of the record level reached early in the morning of May 24-
