AMUSEMENTS “One of the Great Evenings of Ballet Dancing” The New Zealand Herald joins the World in Acclaiming BERYL GREY BERYL GREY BERYL GREY “PACKED HOUSE WATCHES BRILLIANT BALLET” “Ballet enthusiasm knew no bounds last night . . . This was one of the Festival’s brilliant occasions, an event that completely fulfilled the high expectations it had aroused.” THIS WAS ONE OF THE GREAT EVENINGS OF BALLET DANCING IN AUCKLAND, WHEN PURE ART DISCLOSED ITSELF THE MOMENT THE CURTAIN WENT UP, AND NEVER ONCE FALTERED. HER (BERYL GREY’S) DANCING OF THE PRELUDE IN “LES SYLPHIDES” WAS AN EXQUISITE EXPERIENCE . . . THE PROGRAMME CONTAINED A FEAST OF VARIED DANCES. AMONG THEM WAS ONE THAT MUST RANK AS THE WITTIEST AND SLICKEST OF ITS KIND EVER SEEN HERE. THE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT CAME FROM TWO PIANOS IN A PARTNERSHIP WHICH WAS ADMIRABLE FOR ITS COHESION ... IT SERVED THE DANCING NEEDS WELL AND. BY BETTER ARRANGEMENT THAN ON SIMILAR OCCASIONS PREVIOUSLY, IT WAS NEATLY TIED (AND LIGHTED) INTO THE PRODUCTION One of the World’s GREATEST BALLERINAS BERYL GREY BERYL GREY BERYL GREY The Auckland Star echoes the World Acclaim “MAGNIFICENT BALLET BY

DAZZLING GROUP” When faced with the absolutely first class there is little more to do than acknowledge the fact and urge everybody who can possibly do so to go and see for himself.

- IN THE HANDS OF A MAGNIFICENT GROUP OF DANCERS SUCH AS THIS, THE BALLET RECITAL GOES A LONG WAY TOWARD THE IDEAL. FOR THOSE WHO KNOW THEIR BALLET THE GAPS CAN BE FILLED IN IMAGINATION, FOR THOSE GOING TO IT FOR THE FIRST TIME IT IS A DAZZLING REVELATION OF THE POTENTIALITIES OF THE DANCE. TO ANYONE WHO SAW HER (BERYL GREY) A FEW YEARS AGO. GREY WAS THE FINEST DRAMATIC DANCER IN THE WORLD . . . SHE HAS NOW BROADENED HER RANGE INCREDIBLY, GIVING US A DAZZLING “BLACK SWAN” HARD. BRIGHT, SUPERB—ON THE SAME PROGRAMME AS A TOUCHING GISELLE . . . HER FINAL EXIT HERE WAS DEEPLY TOUCHING. ONE DANCER DOES NOT MAKE A RECITAL QUARTET. HOWEVER, AND AS GREY WAS MAGNIFICENT IN ONE DIRECTION, HER PARTNER, BRYAN ASHBRIDGE. WAS A NOBLE MALE DANCER WHO IS STEADILY REACHING A PINNACLE OF HIS OWN. ASHBRIDGE NOT ONLY HAS THE STRENGTH AND TECHNIQUE OF A GREAT DANCER BUT HE NOW HAS THAT ADDED AUTHORITY WHICH IMPARTS THE FINAL POLISH. DONALD BRITTON IS A CHARACTER DANCER OF IMMENSE VERVE AND ALTHOUGH PAMELA MONCUR’S PRINCIPAL TALENTS LIE IN CHARACTER, TOO, SHE MADE AN ASTONISHINGLY DIGNIFIED QUEEN OF THE WILIS. FINALLY AN ENTHUSIASTC WORD FOR THE MUSIC. TWO PIANOS ARE ADEQUATE FOR A RECITAL, BUT THEY NEED FIRST-CLASS PIANISTS WITH A BOND OF SYMPATHY. DUDLEY SIMPSON AND ANTONY ELTON MAKE A SPLENDID TEAM TO ROUND OFF AN EVENING OF MAGNIFICENT ENTERTAINMENT WHICH DREW CURTAIN AFTER CURTAIN FROM A FULL AND ENTHUSIASTIC HOUSE.
