RACING Ravelston Attempting Sixth Successive Win

The Wingatui gelding, Ravelston, will attempt to win his sixth race in succession in the one-mile Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Wingatui tomorrow. The Queen Elizabeth Handicap will be the first leg of the off-course double on the third day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting. Ravelston is a fresh runner at the meeting and is certain to start at cramped odds.

Hopes of a Canterbury victory In the race will rest on the Wash-dyke-trained Marsana. Marsana is an acceptor for both legs of the double and it is reported he will start twice.

possibility here. The heavy going will not trouble him.

Peril and Mary Dee and Cornflake, if he starts, appeal best of the others. Peril and Mary Dee finished third and fourth in the Provincial Handicap. Second Leg Irrepressible and the top-weight Shangri-La will probably dominate betting in the second leg, the Empire Handicap. Both have laststart winning form over seven furlongs at the meeting. Irrepressible on the first day and Shangri-La on Monday. Irrepressible may be the better. J He beat Shangri-La by two lengths when they clashed on the first day and meets her on 31b better terms. Marsana and Black Star are two other favoured runners. There will be an on-course double on the Tainui Hack Handicap and the Electric Stakes. Blooming and Glasha is a likely combination. Fields and form for the off-course doubles are:— TAINUI HACK HANDICAP ”

Marsana on Monday ran creditably to finish fifth in the Members’ Handicap after being left badly at the start. He revels in soft going and will have conditions to suit him tomorrow.

Yesterday morning at Wingatui the track was very heavy and it was still raining there in the afternoon. Cornflake is a doubtful starter in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap and Shangri-La has been scratched- She will carry top-weight of 9-11 in the sprint, the Empire Handicap.

Ravelston is sure to be a dominating favourite. He has a big reputation in the south and has won his last five races. Ravelston is a four-year-old gelding by Kurdistan from Philaster. owned by Mr H. R. Dennis and trained by H. A. Anderton at Wingatui. Altogether Ravelston has won seven races, two of them as a three-year-old. Four of Ravelston's wins this season were against hacks but the

last, over a mile at Invercargill three weeks ago, proved he could master this class of field in heavy going. Over a mile—the distance of the Queen Elizabeth Handicap—he beat Shangri-La, already a winner at the meeting, by two and a half lengths after getting a very rough run. Ravelston carried 7-7 then and has gone up only 51b to 7-12, so weight should not trouble him. Best Of Others Form among the other 10 runners is not strong. Marsana may be the best and other possibilities are Cashmere, a noted mudlark, Lord Fane and Mary Dee. Peril would also have a chance if he races up to his third in the Provincial Handicap on Monday. Cashmere will be returning to the flat after racing over hurdles on the first day of the meeting last Monday.

He is known for his ability in bad ground and although his recent form is weak he is capable of surprising. He beat a comparable field over six furlongs on a dead track at Wingatui in February and showed a touch of class by running fourth in the Hutt Handicap at Trentham in March.

Lord Fane began his campaign for the Wingatui trainer, W. Hewitt, a fortnight ago with a runaway win over one mile and three furlongs at InvercargilL He failed badly in the Provincial Handicap on Monday but is still a
