The Olympic Spirit
The important thing about the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part Is it not even better to help others take part? If the Olympic spirit had become a little dulled by modern competitiveness and an excess of nationalism, it has been given a new lustre by the generous offer of the Italian Government to meet the expenses of a full
team from earthquake-racked Chile. Neither Chile nor Italy may win a gold medal at Rome; but they already share one honour—of having made and accepted a, trujy sporting gesture that would have delighted Baron de Coubertin, the father of the modern games. It is sportsmanship like this that makes the four-yearly festival worth while.
