HIGH WINDS AT AUCKLAND
Ship Drags Anchor,
Puts To Sea
(Neu Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 9.
The cargo ship Newcastle Star, which was dragging her anchor in a fierce storm which raged over Auckland during the night, had to battle her way out of the harbour and lie two miles beyond the Rangitoto Island beacon until the storm abated. The ship was lying at anchor in the stream awaiting a berth and had to leave port at 1 a.m. None of the other four ships riding at anchor was in any trouble. Two hours earlier, the 29.000ton liner Orsova was skilfully manoeuvred by two tugs from her berth, swung round into the teeth of the gale, and headed off for Suva.
Throughout the night, Auckland city was lashed with driving rain squalls and wind gusts of up to 55 miles an hour. Heavy seas are still pounding the west coast and during the night two trawlers had to run for shelter at Onehunga.
