FEASTING AND FOOTBALL

Maoris Win 12-9 In Samoan Village

(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) APIA. June 9.

The New Zealand Maoris were entertained in traditional Samoan fashion yesterday when they visited Saleimoa, a village 11 miles from Apia. The Maoris were welcomed with, the kava ceremony, and later feasted with the village chiefs. The village men and women gave demonstrations of Samoan dancing. During the afternoon an unofficial match was played against Saleimoa, a team playing in the senior reserve competition conducted by the Western Samoa Rugby Union, and after an entertaining match the Maoris won 13-9. The game was played in picnic spirit, with replacements permitted and the spells confined to IB minutes. The match saw the return of M. V. Bevan to the Maori pack and injuries to both D. Mathieson and T. Reedy. Mathieson is expected to be fit again for the match against Samoa, but Reedy is not expected to play again on the tour. The Maoris' score yesterday came from tries by Mathieson (two) and E. J. Thompson, while M. Walters kicked a penalty goal.
