UTILISATION OF COW MANURE
Recovery For Use
On The Farm
The-Counties Association's dairy division and Young Farmers' Clubs were all playing a part in assisting and persuading farmers to attempt to recover manure for the -farm rather than washing it into streams, says the representative of the Pollution Advisory Council in the annual report of the New Zealand Counties' Association, which will be presented at the conference in Christchurch next week .
An inter-departmental committee report on the pollution of waters in New Zealand said in 1952 it was estimated that 1.000.000 acres of dairy land could be maintained in good heart by the utilisation of cowyard manure, of which only 5 per cent, was being saved at the time.
The dairy wastes committee of the council continues to give valuable guidance to dairy factories on the problem of effluent disposal and has' carried out an extensive new survey of the North Island, says the report. A new system of treating dairy wastes where spray irrigation has not proved feasible is the Pasveer system, which is economical and appeared promising. It is a variant of activated sludge treatment and had been used with success in Holland.
